A set of mechanisms ensuring the passage of a nutrient or biochemical compound across the intestinal membrane and its discharge into the portal vein or lymph. The intestinal absorption capacity of adult humans is estimated (for 24 h) at 18 L of water, 3.5 kg of glucose, 500 g of amino acids and 750 g of glycerides.
