4. Conclusion

The development of European Union rules governing the use of other substances (plants and SBNPs) in food supplements has been postponed until sufficient and appropriate scientific data are available , thus favoring national approaches.

National provisions concerning the use of ingredients other than nutrients in food supplements then remain applicable.

In 2008, the European Commission adopted the position that "the establishment of specific rules applicable to substances other than vitamins or minerals used in food supplements is not justified [...] [and] is not necessary in the short term"
