Eco-applications of Proteins: Glues, Foams and Coatings

Plant and animal proteins (wheat protein hydrolysate, whey protein, soy protein and ovalbumin) are promising candidates for the preparation of adhesives, foams and coatings:

• Moisture-resistant glues have been obtained from wheat proteins, soy flour and ovalbumin; whey, on the other hand, has made it possible to obtain a glue for plywood, but which is not moisture-resistant;

• natural ultra-stable foams have been prepared from albumin and whey;

• heat-resistant coatings were obtained by reacting triethyl phosphate with wheat protein.

Proteins offer great potential for developing environmentally-friendly materials that are competitive with fossil-based polymers such as adhesives, foams and coatings.
