5. Example of an industrial reactor calculation
We are going to size a catalytic reactor using the velocity equation method.
Unit type: double absorption (2 + 2). Sulfur combustion with air injection cooling between 3rd and 4th bed.
a = 12% by volume of SO2 in the gas.
b = 9% by volume of O2 in the gas.
x (%) is the conversion rate.
Production: 300 t/d of 100% sulfuric acid.
Overall efficiency: 99.3%.
Gas composition at the converter inlet is as follows:
SO2 2,877 Nm3/h (12% by volume) ;
O2 2,158 Nm3/h (or 9% by volume) ;
N2 18,943 Nm3/h (79% by volume).
Total gas flow: 23,978 Nm3/h.
