Products are subjected to a periodic vertical pulsation as they flow through a tank. The pulsation is generated either by the movement of the pan, or by the movement of the water, the pan being fixed. These devices are known as jigs or piston tanks. Jigging is one of the oldest methods used. However, even today, some of the basic principles behind its operation are still not fully understood. Separation takes place in a bed of particles fluidized by upward and downward currents of water, causing stratification according to grain density.
