5. Application example: total combustion of a coal particle
Spherical, porous coal particles of diameter d p = 10–3 m are combusted in a fluidized bed of sand, the temperature of which is kept constant at 1,073 K. The characteristics of the particles are :
bulk density: ρa = 300 kg · m–3;
specific surface: σ = 10 m2 · g–1;
internal porosity: ε = 0.86 ;
tortuosity factor: τ = 8.6 ;
thermal conductivity: λe = 0.3 W · m–1· K–1.
The bed is fluidized with air at an empty-barrel velocity u = 10–2 m · s–1.
