1. Main features of pervaporation
Evaporation of a liquid mixture through a dense or nanoporous membrane leads to the passage of a vapor, in the downstream compartment, with a different composition from that of the feedstock from which it originates. Material transfer is maintained by keeping the downstream compartment under low pressure, by pumping and condensing the vapors on a cold wall. This selective transfer, first observed by Kahlenberg
