7. Balanced polycondensations
Despite a few important exceptions (diamine + acid dichloride reactions), most polycondensations are balanced. This is the case for major industrial polycondensations such as polyesterifications and polyamidifications.
7.1 Closed systems
As the low-molar-weight products formed with the polymer (water, alcohol, etc.) cannot be eliminated, it is impossible to shift the reaction equilibrium, and the reaction stops when the concentration of the species present is such that the rates of the opposing reactions are the same.
