2. Nanometric objects
The objects we are considering have at least one dimension close to the nanometer. We will limit ourselves here to two families: aggregates, for which certain points of physics need to be clarified, and carbon nanofibers, which are now a major topic. The production methods and properties of two-dimensional systems (and quantum wells), other one-dimensional systems (nanowires) and quantum boxes will be discussed in other chapters.
Aggregates and colloids are clusters of atoms of the order of a few nanometers in size, with a high surface-to-volume ratio, which may or may not have a crystalline structure. Aggregates are generally obtained by physical techniques, the term colloid being reserved for particles obtained by soft chemistry.
