Overview

ABSTRACT

New networking techniques (including those used by “sliced” 5G networks) promise enhanced performance and service-inferred availability. They in particular encourage the development of content services with different constraints.

Such services often rely upon the use of the multicast transmission mode for network resource optimization purposes. But these services impose constraints on networks that support  slices. Such slices may indeed be solicited to forward the corresponding multicast traffic whose patterns must accommodate service-inferred constraints .  Network slice operators are therefore challenged to conceiveand operate multicast slices that are  adapted to the content service constraints.

A challenge that can be addressed by the solution detailed in this article.

 INTRODUCTION

The article is organized as follows.

The first chapter recalls some basic concepts of transmission modes and multicast networks. It also recalls the concept of the "slice", which has been revived with the publication of specifications for 5th generation mobile networks (5G networks). Finally, it describes the problems generated by the use of network slices to carry multicast traffic characteristic of broadcast services, both in terms of quality of service and traffic classification rules.

The second chapter describes the engineering principles for optimizing the use of network slices designed to carry multicast traffic, as well as the quality of broadcast services based on the deployment of multicast slices within a network.

The third chapter details the use of techniques such as multicast signaling and routing protocols, as well as Service Function Chaining (SFC), to optimize the deployment and operation of broadcast services on a network supporting multicast slices.

Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of future prospects, taking into account advances in research in this field.
