It is difficult to quote precise figures for procedure calls, given the rapid evolution of processor and network performance.
As a first step, we'd like to quote some results that are a little old (1990)
, but whose elements of analysis are still relevant today. On this specific architecture — the Firefly —, the client and server execution cost (excluding communication) was 606 ms, the cost of a zero RPC was 2,514 ms and that of an RPC with a useful call packet of 1 Kb was 6,524 ms (figure
