2. Continuous thrust
The impulse model assumes instantaneous changes in speed. In reality, a certain amount of time is needed to produce an impulse. The transfer is carried out in a sequence of propulsive and ballistic phases. The aim is to reach the target orbit using the minimum amount of propellant. This requires the determination of engine ignition and extinction dates, as well as thrust orientation. This problem is formulated as an optimal control problem.
