5. Maintenance and deployment

Section 9 of EN 50128:2011 is dedicated to software maintenance and deployment, and is an important evolution of EN 50128.

5.1 Need

Evolution control can only be achieved if the software is maintainable and testable. These two properties are identified as essential by the CENELEC EN 50128 standard, but they remain rather difficult to implement.

One of the special features of rail systems is their service life. The lifespan of this type of system is forty years, with a trend towards fifty years. The question then arises: how do you maintain a software application for forty years?
