5. Constraints and infrastructure
The primary characteristic of a tramway network is that it can be built and operated on existing roadways without the need to demolish buildings or build engineering structures.
In Europe, it is generally accepted that surface stations should not exceed 60 m in length, to prevent a stationary train from blocking traffic on two consecutive transverse tracks.
