1. General context

In this chapter we will deal with the most elementary aspects of the spectral theory of bounded operators on a Banach space X. The set of such operators will be denoted $L (X)$ or more simply $L$ ; if $T \in L$ , we define its norm by the following formula: $‖ T ‖ = \sup_{x \in X,}$
