4. Chiral liquid crystals

Although often close to the mesophases already described, liquid crystals formed from chiral molecules (or doped with chiral impurities) are of particular importance in terms of their physics and applications. A chiral mesogenic molecule is generally obtained by introducing a carbon with four different substituents (asymmetric carbon).

4.1 Cholesteric mesophase

In the presence of chirality, a nematic order acquires a spontaneous twist of pitch P 0 and axis perpendicular to the director (figure 13 ). The two enantiomers (R) and (S) of a chiral product give helices of opposite direction (right and left). The twisted chiral nematic order...
