1. A brief overview of the international situation

After the first iron wheels rolled along steel rails in England at the dawn of the 19th century to transport coal, lime, and manure using horse-drawn traction, public rail transport developed throughout the century, primarily in Europe, then in North America, and to a lesser extent in Asia.

However, there is currently a great deal of variation in the use of rail networks around the world.

1.1 Differentiated rail strategies
