3. River transport economics

3.1 How does river freight transport compare with other modes of transport?

Historically, goods were transported by inland waterway, then by rail during its development in the 19th century, before being mainly transported by road as the motorway network expanded from the late 1950s onwards. This can be seen by comparing the respective modal shares of road, rail and water transport in 1954 and 2022 (table 6 ).
