7. Medicine and health

The healthcare sector is evolving in relation to other fields of research and knowledge, benefiting from the contributions of new techniques. These include applied mathematics and digital technology, which extend the knowledge accumulated by doctors over a long period of time. They are an integral part of the techniques used for research in this field, which lies at the interface between medicine, physiology, physics, biology, imaging and data science. This section gives two examples of how modelling is used: the first in biomechanics, the second in epidemiology.
