5. Conclusion

Cost-effective maintenance of industrial systems has become a critical factor in business performance, and the traditional concepts of preventive and corrective maintenance are gradually being supplemented by a more reactive and proactive approach to failures. Estimating the residual time before failure (RUL) of a piece of equipment, and the confidence that can be associated with this indicator, should make it possible to avoid unnecessary maintenance expenditure, and prognostics has been the subject of growing interest over the last fifteen years. It has recently been the subject of an international standard, and is now considered a key process in maintenance strategies. A review of the literature shows that many alternatives exist a priori to support prognostic activity: model-based approaches, data-driven approaches, experience-based approaches.
