1. Obsolescence: viewpoints and definitions

1.1 Manufacturer/supplier viewpoints

We need to distinguish between the viewpoint of product manufacturers and suppliers, and that of users (although manufacturers may themselves be users).

For the manufacturer, obsolescence is generally the result of a change in the use of a product; this change is itself the consequence of an evolution that may concern technology, regulations, user behavior, etc. The good then becomes obsolete, i.e. outdated, outmoded or outmoded.
