2. Biobased epoxy monomers from research and commercialization

The high toxicity, negative effects on health and the environment, and petroleum-based nature of the reagents needed to synthesize DGEBA have prompted many academic and industrial researchers to look for less toxic and more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Research into the development of biobased epoxy resins is booming, and has already led to the marketing of some (partially) biobased epoxy resins.

2.1 Biobased DGEBA

As previously mentioned, DGEBA is synthesized by the reaction between BPA and ECH. BPA is a product synthesized by the condensation reaction of phenol with acetone, catalyzed by a strong acid such as hydrogen chloride.
