2. Summary

Butadiene hydroxytelechelic oligomers can be synthesized by three polymerization processes: radical, anionic and metathesis. We are particularly interested in the radical polymerization process, which accounts for most of the world's production of PBHT (hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene), under the brand name Poly bd® by ATOFINA.

2.1 The monomer

Butadiene is a gaseous, flammable and toxic monomer:

  • boiling point is - 4.5 ˚C

  • critical point: T C = 161.8 ˚C and P C = 4,204.3 kPa
