3. Economic calculation of line profitability

The economic competitiveness of a cable depends on five factors: cable construction, material type and cost, production line technology, line productivity and labor costs [27] . However, as this last aspect cannot be influenced by technology (high level of automation), it will not be dealt with here. The other parameters are reviewed below.

3.1 Cable construction

This factor is linked to cable design. It must be able to meet the specifications of international standards at the lowest possible cost. The construction of the cable, its dimensions and the materials used must be necessary and sufficient to meet the required performance levels, but must not go beyond what is required.
