The pressure vessels currently in use or being developed differ in terms of the constituent materials chosen, the design method adopted and the manufacturing processes used.

1.1 Building materials

Generally speaking, composite tanks are made up of a watertight inner shell called a liner, reinforced totally or partially by a material combining reinforcing fibers, providing strength and rigidity, and a plastic matrix, acting as a binder and defining the structure's chemical and thermal resistance. An outer coating can protect them from environmental aggression.

The liners used are either metal (steel, aluminum) or thermoplastic (polyethylene, polyamide). Tanks without liners are extremely rare. Various types of fiber (glass, carbon, aramid,...
