6. Conclusion

The fields of application for smart polymers have diversified considerably over the last few decades. Initially, stimulable polymers were inspired by biological models. Gradually, intelligent biological materials have become increasingly closely integrated with the synthetic materials they interface with. This evolution has led to :

  • implantable biotic chips, capable of treating numerous metabolic disorders (artificial retina, artificial hearing, insulin pump, cardiac simulators or defibrillators);

  • biochips for biochemical and medical tests;

  • or molecular machines capable of performing numerous functions.
