1. Oxidation of hydrocarbon polymers

It has been known since 1946 that the oxidation of hydrocarbon polymers P ^• results from a radical chain process whose propagation is a two-stage mechanism.

Consensus is less firmly established with regard to priming, but three main mechanisms can be identified (equations (1) ):
