2. Physico-chemical and mechanical properties of PHAs

The PHA family is vast, and so is the range of related properties. The chemical structure of these polyesters varies according to the substrate/bacteria pairing used and the fermentation conditions. As with any polymer, this composition will determine whether the material is amorphous or crystalline. In the same way as macromolecular mass, the crystallographic nature of the polymer influences all solid-state physical properties.

2.1 Thermal properties

PHAs have specific thermal properties depending on their monomer composition. Generally speaking, the shorter the carbon unit, the higher the crystallizable fraction of the polymer.
