1.1 Plastic waste treatment: an ongoing environmental emergency
In 2022, only 9% of plastic waste placed on the market globally was recycled into new material, 19% was incinerated, 50% went to controlled landfills, and the remaining 22% was scattered in the environment. . In 2022, Europe had a ratio of 49.6%, 26.9%, and 23.5% respectively between energy recovery, recycling (known as material recovery), and landfill for post-consumer plastics.
