A set of successive or concomitant physical, chemical and biological phenomena leading in all cases to a reorganization of the biomass and a release of CO ₂ (and/or CH ₄ ), H ₂ O, energy (in the form of heat), a possible production of new organic molecules and possible mineral residues.
