4. Applications
As TPUs cost more per kilogram than PVC and other low-performance plastics, they are generally chosen for delicate applications where failure is ruled out. Such applications require exceptional performance and/or a combination of properties that other materials lack (flexibility at low temperatures, high fatigue resistance, softness and long-lasting resistance to skin grease, etc.). Although TPU materials are generally more expensive, their strength and toughness mean that they can be used in thinner thicknesses, thus reducing the cost of the materials.

Sterilization
Polyether and polyester TPUs can be sterilized by dry heat with ethylene oxide, without yellowing, and by gamma rays in cases where slight yellowing is acceptable. If carried...

Statistical and economic data
In the absence of reliable market statistics for TPU films and foils (aromatic and aliphatic), world production is roughly estimated at 14,000 tonnes, two-thirds of which is manufactured in the USA. Europe produces some 3,000 tonnes, with Germany the leading producer ahead of the UK, France and Italy. The remainder of production comes from Asia, mainly Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
