7. Processing thermosetting composite waste materials

The treatment of production waste and end-of-life parts from composite materials has become a priority issue for sustainable development.

In 2002, Europe produced around 1.8 Mt of composites, and France around 300 kt. Thermoset composites accounted for around 70% of this production.

7.1 Regulatory aspects

From a regulatory standpoint, the composites sector is concerned by three European directives.

  • Directive 1999/31/EC on waste management, in particular the regulation of landfills.

    Law no. 92-646 of July 13, 1992 (J.O. of 07/14/92) stipulates that, as of July 1 er 2002, only final waste may be landfilled.
