7. Conclusion

Assessing the probability of ignition is an important step in quantifying the risks associated with activities that use, store or synthesize flammable products. It is a difficult exercise, since it depends on the nature of the product and the conditions (pressure and temperature) at the time of the leak, as well as on the environment in which the leak occurs (density and nature of ignition sources). Work on this subject since the 1990s has led to the development of increasingly sophisticated mathematical ignition models. The downside of this "sophistication" is that the complexity of these models makes them less and less comprehensible to less experienced users.
