1. Background and terminology

1.1 Definition of aging

There are many possible definitions of aging.

We retain the proposed definition by the Nuclear Energy Agency and adopted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI): the process by which the characteristics of a system, structure or component (SSC) gradually change with time or use.

In the rest of the text, we also use the terminology in the following box, taken from the same reference.
