4.1 Don't just aim for the certificate
Third-party certification is not an end in itself. It is merely recognition by an independent expert that your EMS is effective. While obtaining certification is a plus in the eyes of customers, for example, the benefits to be derived from an EMS (better organization, improved performance, etc.) go beyond the certificate, and should be the main motivation for an environmental approach.
