6. Protecting space launches from lightning strikes

Protecting a launcher against the effects of a direct lightning strike requires the installation of protective devices on its structure, which are prohibitively expensive and heavy. By design, a space launcher cannot be subjected to a lightning strike of maximum amplitude without its integrity and mission safety being compromised.
