7. Means of prevention and reduction of consequences

Preventive measures include :

  • process modification ;

  • modification of operating conditions;

  • installation of instrumental safety devices.

Modifying the process or operating conditions often eliminates the possibility of an accident, and should be considered first.

The installation of instrumental safety devices reduces the probability of process drift to a level deemed acceptable.

The instrumental safeguards required to achieve an adequate level of safety are generally determined on the basis of a risk analysis.
