6. Double-clutch gearboxes
Although dual-clutch transmissions have enjoyed some commercial success in recent years, their invention is now quite old. As early as 1940, the engineer Adolphe Kégresse (best known for the invention of caterpillar tracks and various off-road vehicle variants) patented a gearbox with two independent clutches (figure 29 ).
