2. Preliminary calculation of a centripetal turbine

To determine the type of turbine best suited to a given specification, it is necessary to carry out a brief preliminary calculation. Depending on the application, the conditions at the turbine inlet and outlet will be more or less known.

In what follows, we shall consider the case of supercharging automotive internal combustion engines, which is the most frequent application of centripetal turbines. At the nominal operating point for which the turbine is to be calculated, the following variables are generally available:

  • mass flow of flue gas q m ;

  • stop temperature T iE at turbine inlet ;

  • power and speed for compressor compatibility.
