Standard NF X 10-501 gives the following definition of a kinetic pump:

"A vacuum pump in which a quantity of motion is imparted to the gas or molecules in such a way that the gas is transferred from the inlet to the outlet. A distinction is made between fluid-driven kinetic pumps and mechanically-driven kinetic pumps."

These two groups will be studied later.
