7. Propeller maintenance

7.1 Various causes of propeller damage

New propellers have a very good surface finish (roughness " 5 µm)*, but the surface finish deteriorates to a greater or lesser extent in service, depending on whether the vessel is operating in warmer or cooler seas, or in rivers. Deterioration also depends on the time spent at sea, in harbor or in port.
