Engine control refers to all actions taken on an engine to modify its natural behavior in order to improve performance. The word "control" is taken in the Anglo-American sense of the term, and refers not to the notion of "verification" more commonly used in French, but to the notion of corrective actions carried out on certain engine components with the aim of improving performance.
In practice, engine control also performs the basic functions of engine management in terms of air, fuel and ignition supply, etc., independently of the notion of performance enhancement enabled by digital control. This means that the structure chosen to control the engine also performs the functions formerly performed by the carburetor, analog electronic injection or electromechanical ignition.
