5. Low-carbon fuels

In the search for low-carbon fuels, priority is given to those available on the market at affordable prices. These include low-carbon hydrocarbons such as methanol, ethanol, ethane and, to a lesser extent, liquefied petroleum gas, which is a mixture of butane and propane. These conventional petroleum-based fuels could in future be produced synthetically from green hydrogen, recycled carbon and biomass, making them more easily handled green fuels or biofuels than synthetic natural gas which, like LNG, requires cooling to -164°C, or liquid hydrogen at -253°C.
