2. Characterization of different types of wind turbines and their uses

Wind turbines can easily be divided into two main families: those with a vertical axis and those with a horizontal axis. Other, more anecdotal configurations (oscillating profiles, moving blades, translating profiles) have been developed, but have never led to any industrialization.

2.1 Wind turbine development

The main attraction of a wind turbine is its ability to harness the inexhaustible kinetic energy present in the wind. This energy is transformed into mechanical rotational energy, which can be harnessed in two main ways:

  • or directly to drive a water pump, for example;

  • or to drive an electric generator.
