"Nano" is a prefix from ancient Greek ("very small"), used since the early 20th century to illustrate the infinitely small. A nanometer is equal to one billionth of a meter (10 -9 meter), which is 1/50,000 the thickness of a human hair. The series of standards XP CEN/TS 80004 has been defining the lexicon since 2015.
