This section describes the evolution of actively cooled plasma-facing components, from the first-generation carbon components used in the 1980s to the tungsten-based plasma-facing component selected for the divertor of ITER, which is currently under construction.
5.1 Components with a low-Z plasma-facing material – s prior to ITER
The first tokamak to explore the field of long-duration plasma discharges—and thus the technology of actively cooled components—is the Tore Supra tokamak (now called WEST following a major upgrade carried out in 2014–2016)
