3. Conclusion

The EPR is the best possible choice for keeping the nuclear option open by 2020, in line with France's energy policy, and thus being in a position to renew France's nuclear power plants. In continuity with the plants currently in operation in France and Germany, the EPR nevertheless offers innovative features that combine long experience with compliance with safety authority requirements.

The decision by TVO, the Finnish operator of the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 power plants, to build an EPR following an international call for tenders demonstrates the soundness of the choices made. The EPR is now a benchmark for the construction of new third-generation nuclear power plants.
