5. External controls

In order to verify the radiological monitoring carried out by the nuclear operator, other checks may be carried out by independent bodies.

Firstly, the French nuclear safety authority (ASN) carries out two types of external inspections:

  • cross-checks;

  • unannounced checks.

Cross-checks consist of analyses carried out by an external laboratory on samples taken from gaseous and liquid discharges, as well as on samples taken from the environment. Samples are taken by the operator and sent for analysis to the external laboratory selected by ASN.

These cross-checks are supplemented by unannounced checks on targeted samples, with sample analysis carried out by the nuclear operator on the one hand, and by an external laboratory chosen...
