The development of SMRs is based on a substantial background of power reactors and naval propulsion reactors in service (or which have been in service in the past), but also on all the studies and developments carried out in the various reactor technologies. Depending on the type of reactor chosen, the technological developments may be more or less substantial, and all of them face challenges to guarantee their economic success.
