1.1 Spent fuel storage: pool or dry storage

Storage is, by definition, a temporary solution designed to last a few decades, while awaiting the definitive end-of-cycle solution, i.e. recycling or storage of the fuel as it is.

Different spent fuel management strategies have led to a variety of storage solutions, tailored to the needs of reactor operators.

When the reactor operator has opted for the recycling strategy, the spent fuel is shipped directly to the processing and recycling plant, after a few years' storage in the reactor pool.

Spent fuel is loaded into transport casks from the reactor pools and unloaded into the plants' dry unloading cells or directly into the plant pools.
